ELECTRICAL SAFETY

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE

A COC is a document verifying that electrical installations such as the plugs, lights, DB board, geyser, and wiring in a home or business comply with the legislated requirements as detailed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. No person may market, sell, let, or supply an electrical installation that is unsafe. The seller of a property is therefore obligated to obtain a COC before transfer of the property from a legitimate contractible company which complies with all the criteria as stipulated by the authorities, and conforms to the latest Code of Practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

How long does it take for an electrician to issue a COC?

The time taken to obtain a compliance certificate will depend on the extent of the work required in order to bring the site to a state of compliance.

Once an electrician has arrived and assessed the site, recommendations will be made as to what works are required.  The time taken will also depend on the size of the site.

If the electrician does not note non-compliance, then a certificate can be signed and issued after the inspection is done.  The time taken to obtain a certificate will greatly depend on the scope of the works required to declare the site safe and in adherence with legislated requirements.
Do I require a COC when I do alterations to the electrical work on my property?

Yes. In accordance with Legislation, any additions or alteration are made to an electrical installation for which a certificate of compliance was obtained, an additional or supplementary certificate is required for at least the addition or alteration.

Only a qualified electrician with a Wireman’s License, accredited by the Department of Labour and who is registered with the Electrical Contracting Board of South Africa (ECB), is permitted to issue an electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC).
